Title:

"No-Strings Seed Capital for Technology Development: The US Federal SBIR Program"

Abstract:

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program provides over $2.2
billion each year in a competitive process which provides funding for
technology development for small businesses. The largest US Federal
agencies (including the DOD, NIH, NSF, DOE, DHS, and NASA) solicit
proposals for projects and provide funding for those judged to have the best
innovative approaches, technical merit, scientific and management
team strength, and future commercial potential. Projects are organized in
three phases: Feasibility, Proof of Concept, and Commercialization.
Funding is in the form of grants or contracts with no debt to service and no equity
to give up. All intellectual property is retained by the proposing
company.

The SBIR Coach, Fred Patterson, will present an introduction to the
elements of the SBIR program (and its sister STTR program that draws in
universities as research partners) and provide some tips on how to gain
competitive advantage and most effectively tap into this "no-strings" source of
seed capital.
